About the Program
Founded over 25 years ago, Indian Harbor Yacht Club’s Focus on Sailing program offers active and summer members and their families easy access to recreational sailing, sailing instruction, and competitive racing in the club's fleet of Ideal 18 sailboats. The program is designed for all sailors, from beginners to experienced racers, to learn and enjoy one-design sailing and racing with activities overseen by the sailing director and the Focus on Sailing Committee.

Learn to Sail
Beginner: Learn the boat and how to sail all points of sail, mooring, maneuvering with ease, simple rules of the road
Intermediate: Learn fine tuning and handling of the boat, experience different weather conditions, learn weight and sail adjustments
Advanced: Learn to use the spinnaker
Learn to Race
Beginner: Learn the rules of the racecourse, starting techniques, reading race documents, understand the role of the race committee
Intermediate: More rules, windward tactics, downwind tactics, fine tuning boat handling skills, racing with spinnaker
Advanced: Speed testing, advanced rules awareness, advanced boat handling, speed testing, advanced tactics.
About the Boat
The Ideal 18 is an open keelboat which is easily operated single-handed with its self-tacking jib, or competitively raced with two or three people using its spinnaker. The boat can seat up to four adults or two adults and several children, making it perfect for family daysailing.
