IHYC Wins Back The Morgan Cup

In 1964, the trophy donated by Commodore Henry Sturgis Morgan, the co-founder of Morgan Stanley, was designated “The Morgan Cup” by the Board of Trustees of the Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club. The Cup promotes the racing of small sailing yachts by women of Seawanhaka Corinthian, Cold Spring Harbor Beach, Indian Harbor, American and Manhasset Bay Yacht Clubs, but is also open to women racers from other clubs. The annual event rotates between the clubs and the Cup is awarded to the winning club team.

The 55th anniversary of The Morgan Cup was hosted by Indian Harbor, on Sunday, June 2nd. Two crews each from Indian Harbor, Seawanhaka, Port Washington, and Larchmont came to compete in Ideal 18s, only to be met with early morning fog and no wind. However, PRO Jonathan Nye magically brought in some breeze that got the racers out of the mooring field. There was a short RC postponement, with Jonathan and Laurie Smith aboard Sachem, and Roger van Loveren and Regatta Chair Jack Kruse on mark set boat, and Sailing Director Elizabeth Shaw O’Toole on pin boat. PRO Nye got the first race off in three knots of southeasterly breeze, followed by five more consistently square courses that contended with the oscillating easterly, southeasterly shifts.

The racer’s objectives of the day were speed-speed-speed, playing the shifts – especially on the downwind, and protecting position. Skipper Teresa Laughlin and crew Kinnan O’Connell of LYC won race one, newcomer Kate Walz and Tara Zuckerman of Port Washington finished second, and LYC’s second team of Pam Washington and Cathy Gigantino third. The pressure was on for the Indian Harbor crews of Commodore KarinNye and Elizabeth Wolf, and Lauren Toretta and Karen Lau. The light air conditions, which every sailor just loves, remained challenging, yet each leg offered an opportunity for crews to out“womaneuver” the competition.

After four windward/leeward and two modified windward/leeward races, each of the top three finishers placed first twice. While Laughlin sailed strong and placed first for the individual win, the Indian Harbor team recaptured The Morgan Cup with Toretta in second and Nye in third. Indian Harbor last won the Cup in 2013, which was sailed in Sonars at Seawanhaka.

Kudos to the RC team who flawlessly executed the six races within the two-hour racing schedule. In addition, a big thank you to Elaine Dammeyer and our staff for the enjoyable post sailing awards and lunch in the East Room, with a few Bright and Sunnies.
