IHYC member Bill Clemens is no stranger to Block Island Race Week, having competed in the regatta multiple times throughout the years. Skippering Coyote, Clemens won both the first race in the PHRF 1 division on Monday and the Around the Island Race on Tuesday.
Organizers with Storm Trysail Club had initially pegged the Around the Island Race for Thursday but switched gears after reviewing updated forecasts that showed the wind getting lighter later in the week.
“It was a very long beat to start, and we went as close as we could to the beach to get out of the current. We had a fast jib reach down the backside of the island then put the kite up after rounding the southeast point,” Clemens said. “We had several well-executed jibes down to 1BI and hit 14 knots at one point in surfing conditions. Our crew work was exemplary and that was really the difference.”
Bill Clemens and crew sailed his Bolt 37 to an eight-minute victory over the J/111 Moneypenny on elapsed time. This was the second time Coyote has won the Around the Island Race.
PHRF 1 is a diverse class that features five J/111s and a couple of Melges 32s among nine different designs. Coyote is currently in fifth place in the PHRF 1 division with 15 boats competing. Click the button below for Regatta results.
