Indian Harbor member Tom Stark along with his partner Ben Wagner skippered their Melges IC 37 Rush to a podium finish at the New York Yacht Club's 175th Anniversary Regatta in Newport, Rhode Island. Rush improved continuously during the five day and thirteen race regatta and leaped onto the podium with a strong final day. Double digit scores were common for all competitors, as were penalty turns in the very tight fleet. The Rush team was successful in minimizing both as the week progressed and finished third in the Melges IC37 division.
RUSH, skippered by Tom Stark (second from right) and Ben Wagner (plaid shorts), with New York Yacht Club Commodore William P. Ketcham.
The IC37s were the largest and probably most competitive class at the event. A high performance Mills design, the boat is named for the Invitational Cup hosted biennially by the New York Yacht Club.
IHYC had a very strong showing at the event, with entries from Oivind Lorentzen (Hawk), John Melvin (Blackwatch), Bill Mayer (Cygnette) and Jack and Peter Cummiskey (IC37 205).
