In the early morning hours of June 13, Rambler 88 drifted across the finish line near Monaco to capture line honors in the prestigious Rolex Giraglia Cup. George David’s custom 88-foot Juan K design outpaced the other competitors throughout the race but faced a moment of doubt when the winds died entirely about 10 miles from the finish. Rambler eventually finished about 30 minutes ahead of the second finisher.
The Rolex Giraglia Cup is a classic regatta dating back to 1953, originally with 22 Italian and French competitors and now attracts over 200 racers from all over the world. The race gets its name from the Rolex sponsorship that began in 1997 and from the barren Giraglia Rock off the coast of Corsica that is the rounding mark between the start off St. Tropez and the finish near Monaco.
