Meet the New General Manager: Eric J. Ruehlmann

The new general manager of Indian Harbor moved into his office on September 5, 2017, and comes to IHYC as a seasoned hospitality executive who started his management career not in hospitality, but in manufacturing.  Upon his graduation from Loyola University in 1989, Eric joined the management team of a defense electronics company. This challenging experience helped him develop attention to detail, problem solving skills, operating efficiencies, and high standards.

As the defense industry experienced dramatic downsizing in the mid 1990s, Eric felt vulnerable and doubted his career choice.  The River Club general manager at the time was a few years from retirement and wanted someone with Eric’s skills and personality whom he could mentor as a replacement.  Selected as the assistant general manager in 1997, and promoted to general manager in 2000, Eric steered the River Club through tough economic times, natural disasters, changing member demographics, difficult union negotiations, and a protracted lease renewal.  Eric helped the club create job descriptions, implement new standards of service, and upgrade computers, software, and management systems.  During his two decades there he improved all areas of the club: sports programming, food and beverage offerings, lodging, arts and entertainment, and membership.  Eric clearly enjoys the planning process as well as the daily work of implementation. He describes his management style as inclusive and interactive with integrity and trust sprinkled throughout.

If you have not yet had the pleasure of meeting Eric, please introduce yourself next time at the club.  He looks forward to meeting you!
