House Rules

Indian Harbor Yacht Club seeks to ensure an amiable atmosphere and preservation of the Club’s heritage and tradition. The House Committee has established House Rules that members, guests and visitors observe to maintain the warm and welcoming environment that is consistent with the spirit and purpose of the Club. Please review the quick reference below for members and guests.


House Rules Quick Reference Guide

  • Family, Guest And Visitor Policy
      • Members assume responsibility for their family and guests, including all charges incurred.
      • Guests and visitors must obtain a guest card.
      • Children under age 13 must wear PFDs when on Club docks and floats and while in Club launches and other Club boats.
  • Conduct
      • Members are responsible for their conduct as well as the conduct of family members and guests.
      • The staff is authorized to maintain standards of conduct and dress provided for in the House Rules.
      • Rudeness or discourtesy to the managers or the staff is unacceptable conduct.
  • Dress Code
      • Sailing attire is permitted in the Sunfish Bar, the West Porch, the Bar/Grill Room, and the lower South Patio area.
      • Smart casual attire is appropriate in the Clubhouse and for dining in the Main Dining Room and Upper South Porch area. Smart casual includes a collared shirt and excludes cargo pants.
      • Jacket and a collared shirt are required for men and boys over age 12 in the East Dining Room, on the South Porch and in the Model Room when dress dining is precluded elsewhere. Neckties are admired but not required. Women and girls over age 12 must adhere to a comparable standard of dress.
      • Hats, caps, visors and the like (except for ladies’ millinery) must be removed in the clubhouse.
      • Ripped, shredded or torn clothing are not permitted anywhere on the Club grounds.
      • Denim attire is not permitted in the dress dining areas.
      • Children should wear age appropriate attire consistent with adult dress standards.
  • Communications Devices
    • The use of cell phones and other communications devices is restricted in the clubhouse and the Sunfish Bar except:

      • The Red Room, telephone booths and second floor rooms, other than the Library, as available.

      • Devices set to emit no audible signal can receive text messages and monitor calls received.

      • Discrete transmission of text messages is permitted. Tabletop operation in dining areas is not discrete.

  • Evening Colors
    • A single stroke of the ship’s bell will be followed by a cannon signaling sunset and the lowering of the American flag. Everyone in the clubhouse or within sight of the flagpole should stand silently during the lowering of the American flag, until the hail of “Carry on”.

  • Smoking
    • Smoking, including e-cigarettes, is not permitted in the clubhouse or on the porches, terraces, or other covered areas or on the floats or launches of the Club.

  • Conducting Business
    • The conspicuous display of papers or computers, or public discussion of business matters, is not permitted in the dining or drinking areas of the clubhouse. Inquire at the Front Desk about availability of a room suitable for business purposes.
