Frostbiting

Winter sailing at Indian Harbor dates to the 1930s, when it was introduced and championed by Clubmember Southern “Chick” Whittelsey, who in turn was introduced to the sport by his sister Lorna. Chick Whittelsey went on to become one of the foremost sailors in and authorities on frostbiting. Frostbiting flourished at Indian Harbor in the 1930s, attracting sailors of various ages, skills, and experience.

Nearly one hundred years later, the Indian Harbor Winter Sailing Association continues to sponsor an active winter sailing program that provides sailors an opportunity to hone their skills and enjoy competing. The Sunday afternoon races, sailed in nine foot Dyer Dhows, span a two part season from November through late March.

Winter sailing is open to Club members and non-members. Participants generally provide their own boats, although a few Club-owned boats are available on a first come, first served basis.
